Cliff Robertson as Cole Younger in The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid
Cliff Robertson as Cole Younger, infamous bandit gang co-leader and ex-Confederate guerrilla. 150 years ago today, the James-Younger Gang further bloodied its infamous history when eight bandits outfitted with matching beige dusters and Winchester rifles rode into Northfield, Minnesota, intending to rob the First National Bank… but the small farm town fought back, arming themselves from hardware stores and sending the six surviving—and badly wounded—bandits fleeing with far more lead in their bodies than loot in their sacks. Two weeks later, only Frank and Jesse James remained at large after the three wounded Younger brothers were captured and another gang member killed.

SCENE SEPTEMBER - Fest bier, free family fun at SoMinn Oktoberfests
If it’s only September, why is it already time for a barrelful of Oktoberfest celebrations across Southern Minnesota? Because in Germany, what’s recognized as the world’s largest festival occurs mostly during September and encompasses only a few days in October, with Munich’s 2026 Oktoberfest scheduled for Sept. 19-Oct. 4. Although Oktoberfest’s origins date to the October 1810 week-long wedding celebration of Bavaria’s Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (hence the famous Oktoberfest fairgrounds are the “Theresienwiese,” or “Therese’s meadow”), it’s clear that with six million people annually attending Oktoberfest in Munich and millions more partaking in Oktoberfest get-togethers elsewhere in the world, this beer-centric festival isn’t just for royals anymore. In fact, the fourth annual Dundas Oktoberfest has “something for everybody,” according to board member Tracie Vranich. “Not everybody dances to the same polka, so Dundas Oktoberfest is inclusive, affordable and family-friendly,” Vranich said. From noon to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, the Rice County town of just under 2,000 people pours its beer, opens its arms and dons its dirndls and lederhosen with hospitable zest, providing plenty of food, drink and fun. “We close down Railway Street and literally use all of downtown Dundas,”

The library’s annual budget is about one million dollars. The donation will officially be considered for acceptance at the Martin County Library Board meeting September 8th.
