Schweizer: The Journey of Early Seaplane and Helicopter Pioneer
In 1939, three brothers, Paul, William, and Ernest Schweizer, founded Schweizer Aircraft Corporation to manufacture sailplanes, helicopters, and agricultural aircraft at Horseheads, New York. The company began with the Mercury Glider Club, which built the first two Schweizer gliders in the Schweizers’ barn. It was originally named the Schweizer Metal Aircraft Company. Lawyer Bob McDowell suggested that the Schweizers move their manufacturing from their father’s barn to the Elmira, New York area. The Schweizers liked the idea because they needed more space to produce gliders, but they didn’t have the money to make the move. McDowell helped the Schweizers by getting Elmira Industries Inc., the local business development group, to provide them space on the second floor of the Elmira Knitting Mill Building in exchange for company stock. This led Schweizer Metal Aircraft Company to change its name to Schweizer Aircraft Corporation. They sold shares to Elmira Industries, local businesspeople, and soaring pilots. Schweizer is best known for its gliders, also called sailplanes. The first model, the SGP 1-1, was made in 1930. Although few of these early gliders were built, later models became popular. The US Army Air Corps used the SGS 2-8 and 2-12 for training and renamed them the TG-2 and TG-3.

'Generous' Moss tax plan is unfair to Elmira | Guest Viewpoint
Chemung County Executive Christopher Moss recently announced his “generous” plan to split sales tax revenue with county municipalities, and bragged that he had held the line on property taxes. As is so often the case with Mr. Moss, these are half truths at best. Under Mr. Moss, Chemung County has steadily cut sales tax revenue sharing with local municipalities. This forces city and town governments to increase their property taxes, allowing the Moss Administration to spend without political repercussions. His new revenue sharing plan would be more of the same, sharing excess revenue only after he has collected as much as he wants to spend. Even then, his plan is unfair. His intention is to split that pittance of revenue based on population, ignoring the fact that the City of Elmira, as the county seat, plays host to and often subsidizes important governmental and non-governmental services and amenities, including our regional hospital, which also serves as a major employer, and the former 5-Star Building, now a tax exempt county office building. Under Mr. Moss, the county has repeatedly cancelled the shared service agreements that were supposed to justify the county’s retention of more sales tax revenue. The County Legislature finally
