Cherokee County residents urged to prepare for storm's local impacts

Cherokee County officials are encouraging residents to be prepared for local impacts this weekend from Hurricane Isaias. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Cherokee and other parts of north and west Georgia from midnight Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday. A flood watch remains in effect for the area for the same time period. In a video message from Cherokee County Friday afternoon, EMA Director Daniel Westbrook said that Saturday's forecast calls for wind gusts of 40-50 mph, with locally higher gusts possible along ridgetops. "This will cause downed power lines and trees that could block roadways," he said. "In addition, isolated flash flooding is possible with rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches that could be locally higher in heavier rain bands. Isolated tornadoes remain a threat as well, especially Saturday afternoon and evenings." Residents are encouraged to be prepared for the storm and its effects. Cherokee County EMA advises having more than one way to receive a watch or warning. Residents should also be prepared for possible power outages and have an emergency supply kit.
