The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing an apparent police shooting incident at Columbia University, where officers were dispatched to disperse student protestors. The event, which involved no injuries, occurred when NYPD officers attempted to break up a Pro-Palestinian demonstration at the university’s Hamilton Hall on the evening of April 30.

According to The City , Doug Cohen, a spokesperson for District Attorney Alvin Bragg, confirmed that the gunfire did not target anyone, and it happened in a location where only police officers and no students were present. The investigation is standard procedure by the DA’s Police Accountability Unit for any police-involved shooting. The situation escalated after officers entered Columbia University to control ongoing student demonstrations that began on April 17.

Despite the lack of any imminent threats, the officers reportedly used significant force, including flash bangs, which are typically used in severe situations. Students also addressed a video concerning an NYPD officer who texted about the confusing situation. The Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine posted the video on the X social media platform.

On Wednesday, Mayor Eric Adams did not address the shooting during his press conference and praised the NYPD for their “precision policing. He stated that “outside agitators” were on Columbia’s school grounds, which prompted NYPD officers to arrive at the campus per administrative request.

“Well, the majority of people may have been students. You don’t have to be the majority to influence and co-opt an operation,”

Columbia University previously called police on April 18, which led to over 100 arrests as the protests grew. University President Minouche Shafik initially hesitated to call the police but felt compelled to do so again after demonstrators reportedly barricaded themselves inside Hamilton Hall. In the aftermath of the arrests, students said they experienced excessive force and delayed medical attention by the police officers.

The NYPD and Columbia University have yet to release a statement regarding the shooting and explained that an investigation is ongoing after speaking with the outlet. The DA’s office also said they are facing delays in processing arrests due to paperwork complications.
