MANDAN, ND ( KXNET ) — Morton County Farm Bureau hosted its 49th annual Ag Day at Mandan’s Dacotah Centennial Park on May 1.

Ag Day proved to be a fun-filled day of agricultural education, featuring a variety of activities and events for people of all ages.

The event is designed to educate the public about agriculture, an essential industry in North Dakota, and to promote awareness about the importance of farming and ranching.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about crops and other ag subjects, watch sheep shearing demonstrations, visit animals in a petting zoo, and more. Equipment demonstrations also took place throughout the day.

“Ag Day is going on, we think, it’s 49th year this year. We are out here solely to teach kids about agriculture. It’s 100% educational with the different booths and the different people giving from dairy, to the research centers to the cattle women,” explains Nathan Boehm, President Morton County Farm Bureau.

Boehm says Ag Day holds special importance, not only for those who put it on, but for the community as well.

“We’ve lost that generational touch with families in town. We used to have an aunt or an uncle that was out farming that’d you go visit your relatives on the weekend, we don’t have that anymore,” Boehm explained. “We are really losing that touch with our young people and where their food is produced. And those are our leaders of tomorrow. And if those leaders don’t understand what happens in their world, it’s going to be hard for them to lead.”

Others agree but feel like it can be as simple as educating youth about food production.

“It is important so that we can show people that farming and ranching is super important to our culture and it helps us very much with food production and everything,” commented Maya King, Mandan FFA member.

“Personally, I think it’s important so kids know that we don’t just get food from the store. They have to know the roots of where everything is, where it’s grown. And I also think it’s important for kids to know where the animals are and come see them.”, states Kaylee Kuhn, Mandan FFA member.

Kids and members of the community gathered to partake in various hands-on activities and learning opportunities. Officials say that the annual Ag Day was a success. The North Dakota Farm Bureau supports farmers and ranchers throughout the state. And they work to continue to educate the public about the importance of these vocations.
