How Elmira's Brick Pond was accidentally created, produced crystal ice
J. Philip Weyer, 1836-1918, emigrated to the US and came to Elmira in 1856. He was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. J. Philip’s brother, Jacob Weyer, was already settled in Elmira. Jacob owned the Weyer Brick Yard on Sullivan Street. It had beautiful blue clay pits. Shale from the East Hill quarry was mixed with it. The factory formed bricks and baked them for regional building projects. A brick factory with kilns was on the premises. At Jacob’s request, J. Philip came to Elmira to work at his brother’s brickyard. Eventually, Jacob sold J. Philip his yard and moved to Southport. In 1889, a fateful accident came with a monetary twist. A worker with a pickaxe exposed a vein of water from nearby Newtown Creek, which flooded the pit, and most of the area became Weyer Pond, now Brick Pond. An idea emerged from the flooded pit: people want clean ice. The new pond, with its blue clay bottom, filled with water from Newtown Creek - it was crystal clear. In the winter, the new Crystal Ice Company made beautiful clear ice. Around 1896, the clay deposit along Sullivan Street had finally become exhausted. J. Philip’s company opened a new brickyard
