Mahomet-Seymour students exit through broken window as false alarm issued

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — Mahomet-Seymour Junior and Senior High Schools had a false alarm on Tuesday afternoon when an emergency announcement was accidentally issued.

Just after 3 p.m., the ALICE intruder alert was activated. As the announcement played throughout the schools, some students and staff evacuated.

Assistant Principal Doug Fisher said that in one teacher’s class, students exited through a broken window.

Officials soon determined that the alert was an error and there was never any emergency or threat. Buses were delayed for a few minutes while all students returned to their schools for dismissal.

Fisher sent an email to the parents of the students involved in the window evacuation, advising that they should check to make sure their children are okay. He also asked for patience as the situation is worked out with staff and students. Lastly, Fisher said that if students want someone to talk to, members of the student services support team are available.

“We apologize for any undue stress that this false alarm caused our students, staff, and families,” school district officials said.
