MADISON, Wis. - After seeing hundreds of people from across the community come out to volunteer to help paint State Street, and the arrival of new benches, planters and sculptures, the City of Madison is ready to officially launch this summer’s State Street Pedestrian Experiment on Wednesday, May 8.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway will join Alders who represent the area, City staff who helped bring the project to life, and others in a “Grand Closing” of the 400-600 blocks of State Street to vehicle traffic with a ribbon-tying ceremony.

As of May 8, vehicle traffic on the 400-600 blocks of State Street will not be allowed from 3 p.m. to 4 a.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. on weekends and holidays. At the event, City officials will be available to answer questions about the Pedestrian Mall Experiment and how they will gather feedback from the public and local business owners.

You can read more about the Pedestrian Mall Experiment and the process leading up to this point on the City of Madison’s Planning Division website .
