LUBBOCK, Texas — Two men accused of robbing a Lubbock grocery story, Iza Wilson, 21, and Taeveion Dwayne Weatherspoon, 26, have each agreed to plead guilty to a federal charge, according to court documents obtained on Wednesday.
EverythingLubbock.com previously reported that in May of 2023, three men dressed in black showed up at the Food King in the 2700 block of 26th Street around 10:45 p.m. Weatherspoon acted as a lookout while Wilson and another masked suspect went into the store and back towards the cash office.
According to federal court records, Wilson, who was armed with a gun, tapped on the window of the office and pointed his gun and two employees who were counting cash. The other masked suspect, who was not identified in federal court records, was also pointing a firearm at the two women.
Court documents said after about 20 more seconds of trying to open the door, Wilson grabbed a rock/cement brick and threw it at the window. One of the women eventually opened the door, court records stated.
Wilson went in the office and collected cash from the safe while the other suspect held the two women at gunpoint. Court records said the victims told officers the unidentified suspect told them to “shut the f*** up” or he would shoot them. Court documents said about $4,400 was taken during the robbery.
According to court records, Weatherspoon left while the two were inside, and they ran from the store after the robbery. Court documents said a Texas Department of Public Safety special agent and a detective with the Lubbock Police Department were told Wilson and Weatherspoon were involved in the robbery. Investigators got a search warrant for Weatherspoon’s cellphone. The day after the robbery, court records said Weatherspoon sent a message that said, “I hope your a** is proud of that 600, I’m not hitting no more licks with you.”
Both Weatherspoon and Wilson agreed to plead guilty to Affecting Commerce by Robbery. If their pleas are accepted, they will be sentenced at a later date to no more than 20 years in prison.
