LUBBOCK, Texas — Non-profit organization, Open Door, will host their fourth annual Run to End Homelessness on April 6th at 10 a.m.

Open Door CEO, Chad Wheeler, tells EverythingLubbock.com the runners can choose to run a mile or a 5k in the South Overton area, but it does not matter how they finish the run to end homelessness.

Wheeler said, “People can run, roll, skip, dance, do whatever they want to do.”

Wheeler just wants the community to understand the non-profits mission. Wheeler said, ” the overall goal is to have people come out, join together for a common purpose. And our purpose is to end homelessness in Lubbock.”

Wheeler explained the money that this event will bring in will help them do just that.

“That helps us raise money to do what we do to help people get out of homelessness and get into housing and its open door,” Wheeler said, “We want to be about solution funds, not just Band-Aids on a problem.”

Moses Rendon is experiencing homelessness at this moment, and he says the Open Door run benefits a lot of people than anyone can think.

“It’s awareness to understand that, hey, there’s a lot of us out here for different reasons. Some of us have lost our home from fires, assaults, a lot of people that are battered,” Rendon said.

Wheeler said each participant will be given a shirt to remind them of why they’re running.

“This year it says, let us work together. It comes from a quote that’s really near and dear to our hearts, says, ‘If you’ve come to help me, you’re wasting your time. But if you’ve come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together and an open door.'” Wheeler explained. “We are all about solidarity, being together as a community and working together for our mutual benefit.”
