A woman is dead after the vehicle she was driving crashed into a tree in the 1200 block of Algonquin Parkway on Thursday, Louisville Metro Police said.

LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis said Fourth Division officers responded to a report of a collision around 1:20 p.m. Officials from the Louisville Fire Department and Metro EMS attempted to render aid, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Through a preliminary investigation, investigators believe the woman was traveling west on Algonquin Parkway "at a high rate of speed" in an SUV when she lost control, Ellis said in a statement. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

    LMPD's traffic unit is investigating.
