Miami’s prioritization of Louisville (Kent.) Louisville Male School three-star interior offensive lineman Isaac “Spike” Sowells Jr. has been clear since offering him in early January, and on Wednesday offensive line coach Alex Mirabal had his first chance to watch the 6-foot-2, 290-pound prospect work out in person.

Mirabal stopped by Louisville Male Wednesday afternoon to meet with head coach Chris Wolfe and watch Sowells’ practice — the first time Mirabal has watched Sowells work out in person this year — and the second time Mirabal has traveled to Louisville since the start of the year. Mirabal also visited Sowells during the January contact period and met with him face-to-face, but coaches are not allowed to directly meet with players during the period in April and May.

Mirabal also inquired about senior receiver Antonio Harris , a three-star ATH in the On3 Industry Ranking, but did not offer him.

“We talked a lot about Spike’s talent level and what he’s really good at and what he’s unique at,” Wolfe said. “He is the best lineman I’ve had in 25 years of coaching. We talked about not just his physical abilities, and you know his dad was drafted and played for the Cleveland Browns, so he has a lot of gifts, but what he has more than anything else that probably stands out is his mental focus, his mental discipline. The fact that he’s an excellent student and that he’s really dialed into working and doing what it takes to win and get a chance to play on Sundays.

“I’ve never had a kid that’s as talented as him have a chance to kind of pull it all together. I think they’ve seen some of that in their interactions with Spike also.”

Wolfe said it’s been objectively clear Miami has prioritized Sowells and believes the Hurricanes have a strong chance to land the three-star prospect after he took a pair of visits to Coral Gables over the last three months.

“(Mirabal) told me Spike is a priority, and he stayed here all day,” Wolfe said. “We had a non-padded condition workout, and he stayed the whole time for the O-line group. Spike’s dad is our offensive line coach, and he stayed the whole time watching and interacting with his dad. I left the school and he was still there talking to Spike’s dad.”

Sowells currently has an official visit locked in with Miami June 14. He also has official visits scheduled with South Carolina, NC State and Kentucky and has been heavily recruited by Louisville over the last several months, although he said in a recent interview he doesn’t have a problem leaving the state if he feels Miami offers the best opportunity.

Sowells is looking to commit before the start of his senior season.

CaneSport’s Take

I continue to like the position Miami is in for Sowells with spring practice visits concluded and think Miami can make itself stand out on his summer official visit.
