La Moille HS Will Deactivate; Waltham Addition Proposal Turned Down Again

Following Tuesday's results, one school district knows what it must do; while another is left wondering what to do?. In Bureau County, voters said “yes” to deactivating the La Moille High School by a three hundred vote margin. La Moille High School students will either now go to Amboy, Hall or Mendota starting in late summer 2027. The district's seventh and eighth graders will then occupy the high school building. Current enrollment at La Moille High School is around 42 students.

It's the second round of the Illinois high school football season, and our predictions are in for the 2026 Illinois High School Association games around the Peoria area. All games are Saturday unless noted. Last week, the picks in this space went 8-3 (.727) and are 124-41 (.751) on the year. This year's records are in parentheses. 2026 IHSA playoff second round Peoria-area predictions Class 6A 7 Pekin (7-3) at 2 Normal West (9-1), 7 p.m. Friday NORMAL WEST 48, PEKIN 27: These teams have never met in the playoffs. Pekin utilized its backup quarterback in freshman Rowen McKnight during last week's running clock win. He threw four touchdown passes, finding Dylan Anderson three times. Normal West is averaging 46.0 points a game, having scored 50 or more points five times. Class 5A 5 Troy (Triad) (9-1) at 4 Morton (9-1), 2 p.m. MORTON 45, TROY TRIAD 15: These teams have never met in the playoffs. UIC sets enrollment record as U.S. college confidence falls

As doubts about the value of higher education grow nationally, the University of Illinois Chicago is doubling down on affordability and student support and reports record enrollment for the second consecutive year. The university enrolled more than 37,000 students this fall, the highest enrollment in its history. Undergraduate numbers among Illinois residents increased nearly 7%. Marie Lynn Miranda, chancellor of the university, said it reflects a commitment to making college accessible while helping students graduate and secure good jobs. One program covers tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students from families earning $75,000 or less. More than half of this fall’s incoming freshmen qualified. “When you're a university that takes access, affordability, accountability very seriously, the things that make people hesitate about higher education feel less overwhelming for a young person and their family,” Miranda explained. Transfer students are also contributing to UIC’s growth, with more than 2,600 enrolling this fall. The university reports strong interest in nursing, business, STEM and online programs, while working to create pathways for students from community colleges. Nationally, a recent Gallup poll revealed just 31% of Americans consider a college education very important, a record low. Miranda noted the university's racial and socioeconomic diversity
