A Bar for “Gentlemen of Character” Is Opening Downtown
••• An establishment called Beau is opening in the back of the San Marcos Building on State Street (at Anapamu), in the space that was previously Odessa Lounge and Crush Bar & Tap. It’ll have a beer-and-wine license, and I’ve seen it referred to as a “storytelling bar” and “a bar that sells things [and] a shop that pours drinks,” as well as being “for gentlemen of character.” And then there was this: “There’s a new man in town. He smells like cedar, drinks espresso neat, and restores old knives for fun. His name? Beau.” UPDATE: More info, of sorts, from the Beau folks: “We didn’t change our tagline in time for this publish, our bad. The ‘gentlemen of character’ was for the retail store. We were originally going to be a retail shop but then we found this space and decided to open as a bar and retail shop. We will have cigar license as well, lots more to come. It’s a storytelling bar concept.”

Midtown Ventura bodega, sandwich shop opens, Greek eatery to expand
Two different eateries, one offering a variety of food and drinks and the other specializing in sandwiches, opened next to each other in midtown Ventura in December. A Greek restaurant in Ventura is also set to open a second location at a former Souplantation location in Camarillo. Buena Bodega, at 1803 Main Street and Luke’s, at 1807 Main Street, had soft openings on Dec. 16, according to their Instagram accounts. Stephen’s Market and Grill is scheduled to open in late January or early February, said owner Gregory Katrakazos at the site on Jan. 7. Buena Bodega Tessa Bigtree, co-owner of Buena Bodega, said her business is a “hybrid concept” between a specialty market, a cafe and an eatery. The coffee has also been more popular than expected, as the bodega has partnered with Dune Coffee Roasters out of Santa Barbara for espresso, drip coffee and lattes, she said. The menu features specialty bagels, including a bodega chopped bagel with lox from the Santa Barbara Fish Market, cream cheese, bacon, chives, red onions and dill folded in together, Bigtree said. “A bodega on the East Coast has the chopped cheese,” she said. “It’s a play off that.” Coffee prices range from
