Channing Frye on JJ Redick becoming the Lakers head coach: "I think it's a death sentence; he's jumping on a grenade"

The Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job search has taken some shape—or at least that's what some of the latest rumors suggest.

Jovan Buha and NBA insider Marc Stein say that former NBA player and podcaster JJ Redick is the early favorite to become the next head coach of the Purple and Gold.

Redick is considered one of the best basketball minds and has been considered for several NBA coaching jobs. However, without actual NBA head coaching experience, Channing Frye believes that JJ would be committing suicide if he took the gig.

"To be honest, I think it's a death sentence," said Frye. "I think he's jumping on a grenade. I mean, I'm just being; I think JJ is a coach. I know for a fact JJ Redick is a coach, but taking that job, I just don't know. That's a lot."

Coaching the Lakers is an entirely different beast

According to Frye, not only would Redick be doing something he's never done before, but he would also be doing it with a roster that has many big personalities like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. He adds that, unlike coaching teams like Detroit and Charlotte, sitting on the Lakers bench is an entirely different beast, and it's certainly not a "learn your way through the process."

Given the circumstances surrounding the job, Channing thinks that the ideal Lakers head coach is someone who has been around the league for a while. He mentioned former player Sam Cassell and ex-Hornets head coach James Borrego as possible names who would fit the bill better.

"To me, you need somebody who can command that locker room and who's gonna say, 'Bron, I understand what you want to do, but this is my vision for the roster that we have,' and also, the roster has issues. You can be Phil Jackson, and you still gonna have to deal with those things. So, as a first-year coach, I wouldn't recommend that job to anybody. I wouldn't recommend that job for anybody," added Frye.

    Lou-Will shares Frye's sentiments

Frye isn't the only NBA personality who thinks that Redick isn't the right man for the job. Earlier this month, three-time Sixth Man of the Year winner Lou Williams said he doesn't think Redick can command the Lakers locker room .

"There is no chance that JJ Redick is going to be able to command that locker room. Yeah, he and LeBron can sit there, drink wine together, and break down plays, but it's a little different when you got 20,000 people screaming at you, and you have 11 other players that you have to manage as well," Williams said on the 'Run it Back' podcast.

There is no question Redick has the basketball IQ to be a coach in the league. However, the Lakers coaching job isn't your ordinary NBA gig. That's why someone with experience might be a better option for the organization.
