Men disrupt Los Angeles Metro service by climbing on top of train

Police were called to the Historic Broadway station in downtown Los Angeles after two men climbed atop a Metro train Thursday morning.

Sky5 was over the scene on West 2nd Street and South Broadway at 5:45 a.m. after authorities received a call about two people trespassing in the underground tunnels used by the A and E lines and scaling one of the trains.

The incident drew a large presence from the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department as one of the individuals was believed to be armed with a knife.

Authorities were able to quickly get one of the men off of the train but the second individual was less cooperative.

Shortly before 6 a.m., aerial video showed two people being detained outside the station. Police at the scene later said that no weapon was found.

Metro trains in the area were evacuated at the time to allow for law enforcement to search for the trespassers, a Metro spokesperson said. Buses were called to the scene to help transport those affected by the closure.

Metro service was significantly delayed due to the trespassing incident, but was ultimately restored on the A and E lines around 6 a.m. Delays may still occur throughout the day and riders should track the status of their trains when planning travel.

It was unclear why the men decided to climb on top of the train, but Metro officials urged the public to obey rail safety guidelines for their own safety and the safety of others.

“Pedestrians should follow all signage to ensure safety and never enter rail tunnels,” the Metro spokesperson said.

Two unidentified men are likely to face charges for “delay of transit,” police said.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to reflect that the involved Metro lines affected were the A and E lines, not the Metro B (Red) Line as previously reported. The B Line station is located one block over at the Civic Center/Grand Park station.
