Two men were found dead in a "human-dug cave" near a homeless encampment in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 5, along with a mysterious white powder, officials said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said firefighters responded to a "human-dug cave/excavation" in an embankment near the 8700 block of Lindley Avenue in the Northridge neighborhood and found two deceased men inside, Knewz.com has learned.

After a "white powder substance" was seen inside the cave, LAFD called a Hazardous Materials team to the scene, along with an Urban Search and Rescue team to assist with recovering the bodies.

When the hazmat team arrived and scanned the area, all readings were normal. LAFD said "wind dissipated the small amounts of powder initially observed."

There were no injuries, and no evacuations were ordered. LAFD said there was no off-site hazard. The bodies were retrieved by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner.

Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Tony Im told the Los Angeles Times that no foul play was suspected in the men's deaths.
