Illinois to shield some hospitals from assisted suicide law

Illinois has agreed to abide by a federal injunction to shield some Catholic hospitals from a new assisted suicide law.

State lawmakers passed the End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, also known as Deb's Law or Senate Bill 1950, passed last year. It lets adults who are terminally ill choose to end their lives. A group of Catholic doctors sued the state earlier this month saying it violated the Hippocratic oath. Catholic hospitals under the authority of the Diocese of Springfield, Altamont Lutheran Care Center and four Catholic doctors will not be forced to comply with the new law while similar cases go through the appeals court.

Eleven other states and the District of Columbia allow medically assisted suicide.
