LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) — Lincoln police said they arrested a suspect for an alleged DUI crash outside of the police headquarters that temporary knocked out 911 service for the department.

Just after 12 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to the crash outside of the station on Old River Rd.

When they arrived, officers found a 2015 Mercedes sedan overturned.

The driver, later identified as 44-year-old Brandon Riley of Lincoln, also struck a utility pole to where it was completely detached from the ground.

Riley was evaluated by officers at the scene and they said he showed signs of alcohol impairment including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and the odor of alcoholic beverages.

The suspect refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests at the scene. He was then taken to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for injuries from the crash.

At the hospital, Riley refused to submit to chemical testing for blood alcohol content.

He was issued a summons for driving under the influence of liquor with an unknown blood alcohol level and is expected in 3rd District Court on May 20.

Riley was also charged with refusal to submit to a chemical test and is expected at Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date of May 13.

Police said that Riley is a bail violator due to currently being out on bail for a felony child abuse case.

As a result of the crash, the Lincoln Police Department’s 911 phone line was temporarily disrupted due to the damage caused to the utility pole.

They said Rhode Island Energy crews also responded to the scene and were able to make the necessary repairs.

“We commend the rapid response and coordination of our officers, Lincoln Rescue, the Lincoln Fire Department, Rhode Island Energy, and Verizon in promptly restoring critical systems and infrastructure impacted by this incident without significant disruption,” Lincoln Police Captain Kyle Wingate said in a release.

“The Lincoln Police Department considers allegations of impaired driving an egregious threat to public safety. The department remains committed to seeking maximum charges and penalties against those who demonstrate a flagrant disregard for the law and jeopardize the well-being of our community.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Lincoln Police Department.
