Long-time Burlington BBQ joint closes its doors

Bluebird Barbecue, a Burlington staple for slow-smoked meats, shut down this Halloween. The restaurant was set to serve curbside takeout until closing time on Saturday as a final sendoff. "It's time for Bluebird to say goodbye," owner Sue Bette said in a press release. "We wish Bluebird could continue on, but the conditions just aren't lining up for Bluebird to be Bluebird.” The barbecue restaurant had been roasting brisket, chopping beef and shredding coleslaw at 317 Riverside Ave. since 2012. Customers could chow down menu items like the “Family Reunion,” piled high with hickory-smoked meat that’s been cooking for 15 hours. The cuisine put a local spin on American classics, with maple-doused sauce or butter and pulled-pork poutine. Bluebird’s pitmaster ramen, which combined the burnt ends of slow-smoked brisket with Japanese noodle soup, earned a visit from TV personality and chef Guy Fieri for the popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” in 2020. Bette and the rest of the Bluebird Barbecue staff had no further comment on the restaurant’s closure, a representative told the Burlington Free Press last week.
