World War II veteran celebrates his 101st birthday
BLUFFTON, OH (WLIO) - A Lima area World War II veteran turned 101 years old today. Lewis Bassett celebrated his birthday with family and staff at the Willow Ridge nursing home. He served in the United States Navy, doing shakedown cruises for aircraft carriers, and had a long career as a farmer.
Burns Dental awarded Better Blocks for Business grant to repair and beautify building
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima is helping businesses get a fresh look, which they hope will inspire others to revitalize the area around them. The City of Lima and the Lima Community Improvement Corporation awarded Burns Dental with the second-ever Better Blocks for Business grant. The program provides businesses along commercial corridors in distressed neighborhoods with money to make building improvements.

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - A Lima councilman is looking to address public concerns about the Haitian population that has moved into the area. 6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn will be holding a meeting Thursday night to provide a discussion about problems that the public might have and talk about possible solutions to those specific issues. Glenn says he's received a lot of phone calls from people, so he decided to create a peaceful, open discussion about their concerns.

Lima Area Tennis Association announces programs and camps for 2024
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Area Tennis Association (LATA) is ready to share their love of tennis with people this summer. May is National Tennis Month, and the organization is getting the word out about the various activities they have going on this summer. The Lima Area Tennis Association board has been working with the U.S. Tennis Association to host a lot more tournaments around the area this year. Plus, they are gearing up for another summer full of camps teaching tennis to kids, but they are also looking to expand their programming for adults.
IWFFA-ONU Flag Football Tournament gets women out of the stands and onto the field
ADA, OH (WLIO) - A tournament sponsored by the Wilson Football Factory and the NFL gave the ladies a chance to enjoy the game from the field, not the stands. The International Women's Flag Football Association hosts tournaments for women and girls all over the country, but this is the first time they've brought the competition to the Midwest, starting with Ohio Northern University.
Leaders gather for National Day of Prayer
LIMA — Local pastors and area leaders gathered Thursday morning to pray with the community. The joint mission was part of a National Day of Prayer across the United States. “This is the 73rd year of our annual National Day of Prayer,” NDP Allen County Coordinator Theresa Lee said. “On this day last year, there were over 70,000 meetings across the nation. We may have more this year. In Lima, we have had one in the morning, noon and night. It is a wonderful blessing.”

The Lima Salvation Army's monthly garage sales offer good deals for a good cause
LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Lima Salvation Army is raising money with monthly garage sales. The non-profit will be hosting the sales on the first Thursday and Friday of every month this summer, weather permitting, at 614 E Market Street in Lima. The items on sale are donated by residents and include kids' clothes, dress clothes, furniture, and toys. Proceeds help the Salvation Army continue to provide positive programs and resources for Lima's youth.
