A Quick Take on our new Quik Trip!

How many times per month do you visit the Waldo Quik Trip?? It’s my preferred pit spot to fill up the gas tank, and grab a snack. It took years for QT corporate to take over the former Burger King location and build a new, expanded store for our community that opened in June. I stopped in recently to talk with store manager Tyler Zoeller and learned some quick facts about our new Quik Trip!

The Kansas Buffet That Was Just Named One Of The Top All You Can Eat Spots In The State

Fourteen cooking stations. More than 60 Italian dishes. A cobblestone piazza built right inside a restaurant, with fountains and flower-covered balconies overhead. That combination sounds like a fever dream after too much pasta. Yet it’s real, and it sits in the Kansas City suburbs. Kansas diners recently helped push...

Spooky mouse droppings, live roaches: KC-area restaurant inspections - Halloween edition

Happy Halloween, Kansas City. Here are your weekly frightful violations at Kansas City-area restaurants — from leaky sinks to food kept in refrigerators longer than the health code says. Health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City-area restaurants last week. Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public. In Kansas City and Independence, each city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better. Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly after. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. They are available for Kansas City at inspectionsonline.us/foodsafety/mousakansascity/search.htm and Johnson and Wyandotte counties at portal.kda.ks.gov/Food/FoodInspectionSearch . Here are the restaurants in Kansas City and Johnson Counties that received seven or more priority and priority foundation violations from Oct. 18-24. No eateries in Wyandotte County or Independence met the threshold during this time period. Desi Bites 8542 W. 133rd St., Overland Park 12 priority and priority foundation violations

Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. That chain, based in South Korea, now also has locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360

Fast-food chain has closed two Johnson County restaurants. More remain open

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. No national closings have been reported this month, but late last year, Arby’s quietly closed dozens of locations after sales dropped by more than 6%, according to reporting from TheStreet. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

The Kansas Mexican Restaurant That Rolls Its Tortillas By Hand Every Morning

Your meal here starts with a warm flour tortilla, a blue bottle of squeeze margarine, and fresh salsa. No chips. No basket. Just a tortilla made that same day. I love how simple that sounds. This family brought its tortilla recipe from central Texas and has been rolling dough in Kansas since 1988.

A massively popular Southern chicken chain is opening its doors in Raytown this week , taking over the space of a shuttered Applebee’s and bringing around 120 jobs to the area, according to a press release. Chick-fil-A opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at 9330 E. 350 Highway. Raytown’s first-ever Chick-fil-A will host a “moove-in” party on day one, offering guests who show up in cow-spotted clothing or accessories a free entrée or kid’s meal. The Star initially reported on the new Chick-fil-A location in May, when a spokesperson told the publication that they were eyeing a fall opening date. What was built in a demolished Applebee’s place is the 20th Chick-fil-A location in the Kansas City area, complete with seating for 90 guests, a dual drive-thru with a dedicated lane for mobile orders and an indoor playground. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chick-fil-A Raytown (@chickfila_raytown) The Raytown location of the Atlanta-based chain is owned and operated by Andrew Hartley, a press release said. Kansas City has plenty of lunch spots, but very few of them come with stone columns, a fountain in the middle of the room, and a glass roof overhead. One of them sits inside a famous art museum, and it looks more like a courtyard in Italy than a place to grab a sandwich.
