Redding may cut power to prevent summer wildfires
As a heat wave ushering in triple-digit temperatures slammed Redding earlier than expected this year , the City Council will vote Tuesday night to finalize a proposal to preemptively cut power to some communities this summer should wildfire-prone weather conditions arise and prompt red flag warnings. Part of the proposal before the council includes the city-owned Redding Electric Utility offering $500 rebates to residential or commercial customers located in areas deemed at highest fire risk to help offset the purchase of power backup generators or batteries. The council will vote on the issue at its meeting on June 16. Lisa Bryan, REU's assistant director of customer services, said should the council approve the proposal, the plan will detail areas the agency has deemed at highest risk of being affected by wildfire. REU officials said earlier this year that their analysis is based on an analysis of 20 years of wildfire and weather data to determine which parts of Redding would most likely need to be covered by possible preemptive power cutoffs to lessen chances that a wildfire could break out. There's nothing in place right now that governs when REU will turn off power in a public safety power shutoff

Fire crews aggressively fought a vegetation fire in Bella Vista that was growing quickly on Sunday afternoon, as temperatures soared over 100 degrees. Forward progress on the Javelina Fire was stopped at 8.6 acres around 4:15 p.m. on June 14, according to reports coming from the field to Watch Duty, the app that tracks fires and response to them. The fire had been reported around 2:40 p.m. in the area of Javelina Road and Highway 299, east of Redding. The fire grew to 5 acres some forty minutes after it was reported to fire agencies. It had a slow to moderate of growth as crews attacked it from the air and land. Initially, crews had observed the fire moving at a moderate rate with some spotting, according to Watch Duty. One structure also had been threatened. Crews flying over the fire dropped retardant to slow down and extinguish the blaze. Fire officials on scene also requested additional engines and a hand crew to aid in suppressing the fire. Parts of Northern California, including the Redding area, are experiencing a heat wave . Firefighters working the Linden Fire in a wooded area south of downtown Redding stopped forward progress on the blaze Friday afternoon. The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. on Friday, June 12 near Linden Avenue and West Street. It grew to nearly 18 acres, the Redding Fire Department reported. The fire threatened structures in the area, according to Watch Duty, which track fires and emergency response. That was after an initial estimate of 3 to 5 acres that crews on the ground had reported within 15 minutes after the fire broke out. The Redding Fire Department requested additional resources, Watch Duty reported. Police called for residents to evacuate their homes along and east of Buenaventura Boulevard, on Auburn Drive, Starlight Boulevard and connecting streets in that neighborhood, such as Seminole Drive and Stokes Court.
