Union County library events for April

2024-03-27Union County, Pa. — The Union County Library System, which includes the Public Library for Union County in Lewisburg, Herr Memorial Library in Mifflinburg, and West End Library in Laurelton, is hosting the following events in November.

Adult/Teen Programs
• Mah Jongg Club
Tuesdays: 1-3:30 p.m.
Anyone interested in playing the American version of the ancient Chinese tile game are welcome to socialize and play.
• English as a Second Language
Monday, April 8, 15, 22, and 29: 12:30-2 p.m.
Jeanne Crago, ESL Instructor from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, will help students of any language background with conversation, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills in English. Students of all levels are welcome.
• Conversational Spanish
Thursdays: 6-7 p.m.
Linda Kander, Spanish teacher, provides an informal class to learn Spanish or to brush up your skills. All levels welcome! Classes will be adapted to the varied skill levels of those attending.
• Beginning Spanish
Thursdays: 7-8 p.m.
Led by experienced instructor/coach Linda Kander, these sessions offer an introduction to useful basic vocabulary, conversational expressions, and structures for practical use of the Spanish language.
• New Parent Group
First Saturday of each month: 10-11:30 a.m.
Join us the first Saturday of each month for an informal meet up led by Doula Tasha Hall. Connect with fellow new parents and parents-to-be and discuss the joys and challenges of new parenthood.
• The Next Chapter Book Club
Monday, April 8: 6-7 p.m.
Join fellow book lovers every second Monday of the month to discuss all things books! Each meeting the group will pick a new book to read and discuss.
• Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Susquehanna Valley Lewisburg
Monday, April 15, 10 a.m to 4 p.m.
Join members of the Quilting Guild for a day of quilting, sewing, and needle work. Bring your own materials. Those looking to attend all day are permitted to bring a bagged lunch and are responsible for the clean-up.

Learn what Google Drive is, how to organize files, and to create new documents. Also learn about Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
• Grief Support Group
Thursday, April 11: 6-7 p.m.
For anyone who has ever experienced a significant loss of a loved one or friend. Join Donna Miller, Bereavement Coordinator, as she helps guide you through the healing process.
• Master Gardeners — All About the Fruit
Monday, April 15: 6:30-8 p.m.
Join Kathy Demchak, senior extension associate at PSU, as she speaks on less common fruit such as elderberry, currants, gooseberries, hardy kiwi, and goji.
• Embark Book Club: Feed the Mind, Nourish the Soul
Tuesday, April 16: 6-7 p.m.
Join Yoga Therapist Dawn Shawley and others for enriching conversations based on yoga-related and other inspirational books. This month's book will be "Perfectly Imperfect: The Art and Soul of Yoga Practice" by Baron Baptiste. Feel free to try the practices and bring questions or reflections! Each meeting will open with a few minutes of grounding, breath awareness, and may include light movement, to be followed by discussion.
Participants are responsible for getting their own copy via the library or purchase. Prior reading of the book is not required, but is preferred. Hot tea provided for participants that bring their own travel mug or thermos.

Children's Programs
• Baby Storytime
Fridays: 11-11:30 a.m.
A storytime based on the “Mother Goose on the Loose” program, which shows that children learn best through routine and repetition in a nurturing environment. Learn songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 0-2.
• Toddler Storytime
Wednesdays: 9:30-10 a.m.
Join for an in-person storytime with books, songs, rhymes, finger plays, and simple ASL signs. For ages 1-2.
• Preschool Storytime
Tuesdays: 10-11 a.m.
Join Miss Alicia to sing songs, read books, and learn some simple ASL signs centered around a different theme each week. For ages 3-5.
• Take Apart Day
Monday, April 1: All day
Come to the Exploratorium and take apart some old electronics! Use the provided tools and explore the world inside. Ages 7 to 12, no registration required.
• Book Buddies
Thursdays,: 4-4:45 p.m.
A special program for kindergarteners and first graders who are just beginning to read. Children read books and participate in activities with sight words and letter sounds.
• Nature Club
Monday, April 1, 15, 22, and 29: noon to 4-5 p.m.
Explore the wonders of spring with Miss Alicia! Watch spring come alive, create a nature journal, and enjoy nature-themed activities. For ages 2-13 years old.
• Art Night at the Library
Tuesday, April 30: 6-7 p.m.
In celebration of the Lewisburg Arts Festival, children can come to the library and demonstrate their artistic abilities with three different mediums. For ages 3 and up.
• Storytime with Bentley and Sawyer
Thursday, April 11, 18, and 25: 10-11 a.m.
Enjoy listening to stories with service dogs Bentley and Sawyer during this open storytime for toddlers and preschoolers.
• Lego Night
Tuesday, April 2: 4-7 p.m.
Leave your blocks at home, bring your imagination, and build with Legos. For all ages.
• Evangelical Community Hospital Children's Health Fair
Saturday, April 6: 9 a.m. to noon
Stop by the library’s table at the Children’s Health Fair held at the Miller Center.
• Eclipse Event
Monday, April 8: 2-4:30 p.m.
Come to the library to view the eclipse and the solar system. Activities will be held indoors, and participants will receive a pair of glasses to view the eclipse safely. For all ages. Register to attend by calling 570-523-1172, visiting the library, or registering online. Registration is required to receive eclipse glasses.
• "Slug in Love"
Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10: 10-11 a.m.
Celebrate the Week of the Young Child with a special storytime, focusing on the importance of reading to young children. Following the storytime featuring the 2024 Pennsylvania One Book, "Slug in Love," there will be special interactive centers. For ages 1-5.

• Egg Drop Challenge
Saturday, April 20: 10-11 a.m.
Test your STEAM skills with this version of the classic egg drop challenge. For ages 7–12.

Thursday, April 25: 6-7 p.m.
Celebrate taking care of the Earth, and learn ways to help protect our planet. For ages 5 and up.

April is National Poetry Month. Pick up a kit at the library that will help you to write your own poetry by blacking out words from another text to create a poem or statement. No artistic or poetic skills necessary!
• Earth Day Craft: Bug Hotel

Make an outdoor structure for insects from natural materials to create a “hotel” providing them with shelter and a cozy, safe place to stay.

Join knitters and crocheters of all skill levels. Enjoy friendly conversation and share tips and tricks as you work on your latest project. An instructor is on hand to teach knitting basics for beginners. The library has a supply of yarn and needles.

Learn to Crochet! Bring your own size 7, 8, or 9 crochet hook. We have a good supply of yarn at the library. If you want to bring your own yarn, please make sure it is 4-ply knitting worsted in solid color. For ages 8-adult. Class size is limited.
• Mah Jongg
Fridays: 1-3 p.m.
Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. No experience is needed. An instructor is on hand to teach newcomers this tile-based game.
• West End Readers
Second Thursday of the month: 6-7 p.m.
Connect with fellow book lovers as they discuss "Killers of the Flower Moon" by David Grann. Each month our group will select and discuss a new book.

• Craft of the Month — Windmill Kit
Month of April: During library hours
Children may pick up a take-home kit to make a fun foam windmill. For ages 5-12. One kit per child, supplies are limited. Younger children will require assistance.
• Preschool Story and Activity Time!
Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Join us each week for our in-person storytime that includes a weekly theme with read-aloud stories, age-appropriate activities and crafts, musical instruments and songs. Adults are offered a take-home paper with theme-related crafts, rhymes, snacks, and suggested getting ready for kindergarten activities. For children up to age 5 along with a parent/caregiver. Parents must stay with children during class.
• Reading with Maverick
Saturday, April 27: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Children can read their favorite books to our certified therapy dog, Maverick. One child is allowed at a time. To sign up for a 15-minute time slot, call the library at 570-922-4773.
• Flower Power
Saturday, April 27: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Children may decorate a small flower pot, fill it with potting soil, and then plant some flower seeds. For children ages 3-12. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
