Norwich held its first official Diwali recognition ceremony at City Hall on Nov. 5, celebrating the city's Indian and South Asian communities. The Diwali ceremony was hosted by Mayor Swarnjit Singh and held in Singh's office. Afterward, a proclamation was read in City Council Chambers to recognize Diwali, then guests walked to the Royal Punjabi for tea and Indian foods, such as samosas and jalebi, which is a South Asian sweet made by piping a wheat flour batter into spiral or circular shapes, deep-frying it until crisp, and soaking it in warm sugar syrup The ceremony included prayer and the traditional lighting of diyas, or lamps, symbolizing light, hope, peace and prosperity. Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by millions of people around the world. The holiday symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness and highlights values including peace, prosperity, family, gratitude and unity.
