LAYTON, Utah ( ABC4 ) — Layton resident Katelyn Christensen is turning 21 this month — but this is not your average birthday.

All Katy wants for her birthday is birthday cards. In fact, she wants to break the world record for the most birthday cards received.

“It’s a lofty goal,” Katy’s mom said.

Initially, Katy wanted to get 321 cards — representing Down syndrome, as people with Down syndrome have a third copy of chromosome 21 — but she reached that goal on March 21, or 3/21.

Katy, who has Down syndrome, will turn 21 on April 29.

Katy has received cards from Utah Gov. Cox, Mitt Romney, and from several countries — including North Syria, Denmark, Switzerland, Taiwan, England, and Japan.

When asked what Katy will do with all of these cards her mom responded, “She will pull them out, and she will re-read them and just love them all over again.”

Joy Petro, Layton City Mayor, shared a special “ Mondays with the Mayor ” episode, where she introduced Katy and encouraged Utahns to help make her birthday a special one.

“Let’s everybody send in those cards, wish her a happy birthday, and meet this 21st birthday goal for my new friend Katelyn,” Petro said.

To help make Katy’s birthday wish come true, send her a card to “Katelyn Christensen” at 1123 N Fairfield Road Unit #1454 Layton, Utah 84041-9998.
