Lamesa man, 89, dies after Dawson County crash; Lubbock man hospitalized

LUBBOCK, Texas — Rex Zant, 89, of Lamesa, was pronounced dead after a Dawson County crash, the Texas Department of Public Safety said on Friday. John Villalobos, 37, of Lubbock, was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries, DPS said.

DPS said the crash happened around 3:04 p.m. on Thursday at U.S. 87 and County Road L.

According to DPS, Villalobos was traveling east on County Road L and Zant was heading south on the highway. DPS said Villalobos did not yield the right of way at a stop sign and struck Zant. According to DPS, Zant was taken to Medical Arts Hospital in Lamesa, where he was pronounced deceased.

DPS said Villalobos was taken to UMC. The crash remained under investigation as of Friday.
