    Gundersen celebrates youth apprenticeship week

LA CROSSE (WKBT) -- May 5-11 is Youth Apprenticeship Week and Gundersen Health System is celebrating being a part of the program.

Gundersen is just one of over 6,500 employers across Wisconsin to offer the youth apprenticeship program. The program allows high school students the chance to explore careers before going on to higher education.

Heather Schimmers is the Regional President of Gundersen Health System. She explained the importance of this program with a shortage of healthcare workers on the horizon.

"It is so incredibly important to offer these apprenticeships because we know what the world of the healthcare workforce shortage looks like in the next 10 years," said Schimmers.

"We know the shortages that are coming, we have to start young, we have to get people interested and engaged."

Youth apprenticeships are offered to high school juniors and seniors. Career paths in the program range from everything from the trades, to healthcare, to teaching.
