Knoxville Police: Woman shot during attempted motorcycle theft

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — An investigation is underway after a shooting and attempted vehicle theft at the Red Roof Inn on Central Avenue Pike Monday morning.

The Knoxville Police Department shared that officers responded to a shooting at the Red Roof Inn around 4:15 a.m. on April 29. While responding, KPD said officers learned a woman, who had been shot, was in the parking lot of the Hooters on Central Avenue Pike.

At the Hooters, officers saw a man giving aid to the woman, however, he sped away from the scene on a motorcycle according to KPD. The man then crashed on Cedar Lane near Haynes Sterchi Road and was detained. According to KPD, the motorcycle was reported stolen out of Chattanooga.

KPD shared that based on their current investigation, it is believed that a man and woman were attempting to steal a motorcycle at the Red Roof Inn when the man fired multiple rounds, hitting the woman at least once. The man who fired the shots left the scene before officers arrived. KPD said his identity has not yet been confirmed.

The woman who was shot was taken to an area hospital in “extremely critical condition.” The man who crashed on the motorcycle was also taken to the hospital for “non-life-threatening injuries” according to KPD.
