This historic Kings Mountain mill could soon become apartments

A historic Kings Mountain mill that was originally opened in the late 1800s by one of the town's founders could soon be transformed into luxury apartments. The Kings Mountain City Council voted 6-1 to rezone the historic Phenix Mill property from light industrial to semi-urban residential. The change allows a developer to turn the building into apartments. Councilman Tyler Fletcher was the sole dissenting vote. Originally known as the Dilling Cotton Mill, it was built by Freno Dilling around 1892. The property is located on Phenix Street with U.S. 74 to the north and bordered by Norfolk Southern railroad tracks along the northwest. Brad Lagano, city planning director, said the property is just under 10 acres and the semi-urban residential designation fits with the surrounding area. Many of the homes near the building are former mill village houses. According to Cleveland County property records, the land is valued at $124,000. Lagano said the Dilling Mill operated for 50 years until it was purchased by Burlington Industries and renamed Phenix Mill in 1940. He said it was in operation until 1982 and has been sitting vacant for the past 40 years. A rusted chain-link fence with a no trespassing sign surrounds

A two-story bank vault sits inside an old South Carolina textile mill. Today, couples celebrate weddings and big parties right beside its heavy doors. That vault still shows off its original brick and steel, which feels delightfully dramatic for a party. It shares the property with a rage room, artist studios, creative workshops, and a model train station.
