Interstate I-81 closure planned for Saturday
Southbound Interstate 81 in Staunton is scheduled to be closed overnight this coming weekend, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The closure will be from 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, until 4 a.m. the next day. VDOT said the closure will allow contractors, who are in the process of widening I-81, to install an overhead sign structure near the New Hope Road bridge overpass. During the closure, southbound motorists will detour at Exit 225 and follow the Route 262 bypass (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) around Staunton. Motorists will rejoin I-81 at Exit 220. Motorists who need to reach I-64 east will follow the same route and then use Exit 221 to head east on I-64. The ramps onto I-81 south from Route 262 and U.S. 250 (Jefferson Highway) at exit 225 will be closed, VDOT said. To minimize congestion while the detour is in place, VDOT said there will be no left turns from southbound Route 262 onto northbound U.S. 11, or from southbound U.S. 11 onto southbound Route 262. Digital message boards will alert motorists of the I-81 south closure and advise them to follow the green-and-white “Emergency Route A” signs through the detour. The Staunton-area widening is

Community Perspective: Bringing Passenger Rail to the Valley
You’re on I-81, with an overturned tractor-trailer up ahead. Again. Traffic is backed up for miles. Gas, expensive as it is, is burning in the tank as you sit still. You feel your blood pressure rising as you hear one car honk after another. Your GPS says you’ll be late to your destination, and at this point you’re not even sure if you want to arrive.
