FCPS bus policies get renovation

Bus policies have changed. The Fairfax County School Board has implemented bus IDs to promote safety and efficiency for student bus riders. This policy—approved by Superintendent Michelle Reid and the FCPS Office of Transportation Services—requires students to present their IDs to their bus driver each time they enter and exit the bus. This differs from previous school years, when students could easily get on and off the bus without any identification. Along with the IDs, new technology has been added to modernize by introducing tablets and a new bus-tracking app. These additions are met with mixed opinions from both students and faculty across the county.

While North Beach has gained notoriety for its family friendly events and atmosphere, two glaring problems — flooding and parking — remain as issues the town’s next mayor and council will have to deal with after the November election. “We have to fix everything that’s underground first,” Mary Healey, incumbent council member and mayoral candidate, said about the flooding issue. Healey was making reference to an ongoing replacement of cast iron water saddles throughout town. The project started last fall. “We need a systemic approach” to implement flood mitigation, Elizabeth Lawton, a former council member running for mayor, said, adding that “finding resources and grants” would be the task of the next town administration. “Get these projects as efficient as possible,” Michelle O. Crosby, an incumbent council member and mayoral candidate, said about the use of mitigation projects funding. The three mayoral candidates and five of the six residents who filed for a seat on town council met with the public at town hall Oct. 15 to discuss the issues of the upcoming election. Healey, Lawton and Crosby are each hoping to succeed two-term mayor Mike Benton, who is winding up his 16-year stint as an elected town official. The
