Kansas City Chiefs discover season opening fate as NFL delivers blockbuster

The Kansas City Chiefs will begin their bid to win a third straight Super Bowl against AFC rivals the Baltimore Ravens with the 2024 NFL season set to begin in spectacular style.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will host Lamar Jackson and the Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 1 on Sept. 5 in an 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff, broadcast live on NBC and Peacock.

The game will be played in the traditional Thursday night slot afforded to the reigning Super Bowl champions to kick off the new campaign.

The matchup is a repeat of the AFC Championship game in January when the No. 1 seed Ravens' offense faltered as Kansas City showed its championship DNA to grind out a 17-10 win M&T Bank Stadium and advance to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, where the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers two weeks later.

The Chiefs' opponents for the new season have already been confirmed, with just the dates to be revealed. In addition to home and road games against AFC West rivals the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs have been matched with the AFC North and have road games the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns.

They will host the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead, as well as looking forward to games against the NFC South – the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – with two at home and two away.

Three other three matchups of the 17-game schedule promise to be hugely entertaining, with the Chiefs set to host the up-and-coming Houston Texans. They will also play the Buffalo Bills and 49ers on the road at some point in the campaign, ensuring fans get a Super Bowl repeat in the regular season.

The full NFL schedule is set to be released on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, live on NFL Network. The second game of the season has already been confirmed, with the Philadelphia Eagles taking on the Green Bay Packers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sept. 6.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings all know they will have games in London against yet-to-be-revealed opponents in October, while the Carolina Panthers will host a home game at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.
