CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — The shipping vessel that lost control of its engine speed near the Ravenel Bridge caused over half a million in property damage. The MSC Michigan VII, a 70,000-ton cargo ship piloted by Charleston Pilots, departed from the North Charleston Container Terminal on June 5. While heading down the Cooper River when the engine began increasing speed without warning and would not respond to further commands. The ship became stuck going between 14 to 17 knots, approximately 16 to 20 m.p.h., twice its normal speed.

(WCIV) — The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified the man who drowned near Savannah Highway last week. 20-year-old Martin Vasquez of Guatemala died on June 6 at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Long Branch Creek along Savannah Highway, according to the coroner's office. The cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning.
