The Roanoke Raven: Interview With a Local Superhero
This past Wednesday, The Brackety-Ack used the Raven-Signal to call in the help of a special guest for an interview: The Roanoke Raven himself! Our paper had the pleasure of inviting our very own real-life superhero onto campus to learn more about his hero origin story, community service, dastardly villains, and the inspiration behind his drive. For those who aren’t familiar, the Roanoke Raven is a masked protector of Roanoke City as Batman is to Gotham; however, with a much kinder and non-violent method of fighting crime. He’s passed out bottled waters to citizens struggling within the heat wave last summer, supported all sorts of donation drives, cleaned up hefty amounts of litter and even returned any and all shopping carts back to their locations. With a passion for serving and supporting the Roanoke community, here’s what he had to say in response to our questions:

Historic Derby Restaurant changes hands
It’s 10 a.m. Thursday and a routine scenario is unfolding at The Derby Restaurant in Bannertown as breakfast customers trickle out and the staff prepares for the lunch crowd lured by that day’s spaghetti special. Yet there is something different in the air this particular morning other than the smell of bacon frying. Upon further review, there is James W. “Jimbo” Pell III standing by his usual spot near the cash register, although the afore-mentioned atypical atmosphere surrounds the third-generation owner of The Derby on this occasion. The reason for that becomes clear, with Thursday being three days removed from the sale of the historic restaurant that had been in Pell’s family for nearly 90 years. “Well, I’m just ready to retire,” Pell said of that move involving the second-oldest restaurant in the Mount Airy area behind only Snappy Lunch downtown. “I’m 63 years old and I’ve been working here for 53 years,” he added in recalling how this started as a bus boy and dishwasher at age 10. “We closed on it Monday,” Pell said of the restaurant property occupying a corner spot at the intersection of South Main Street and N.C. 89-East. Although that was Pell’s last “official”
