Local father's gratitude sparks $1,500 giving campaign to Pocatello Community Charter School
POCATELLO — After finding academic success for his autistic son at Pocatello Community Charter School, a local man is giving back to teachers and the disadvantaged this holiday season. What started as a simple gesture of kindness to the educators at Pocatello Community Charter School has transformed into a grassroots giving campaign. Matt Hansen, a local real estate agent and parent, first sought out the charter school after his son Ryland struggled in traditional classrooms due to his autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. "We got him into PCCS, and he really thrived there," Hansen said. "It's more like experience-based, interactive learning." Appreciative of the educators' efforts and desiring to give back to them in some capacity, Hansen sought out ways he could contribute and found a series of Amazon wish lists in the PCCS supporters Facebook group, which functions similarly to a parent-teacher association. The items on the list were often simple, such as a pack of 10 fuzzy hats for students who participate in school hikes up Mink Creek or other classroom essentials. "That was something I could get behind," Hansen said. "All the items on the lists were really about the kids and improving the learning environment for them."

Blad out as Pocatello voters reshape city leadership
Pocatello voters delivered a clear message Tuesday night — it's time for new leadership. Three new faces will join the City Council while incumbent Mayor Brian Blad finished a distant third in his reelection bid, setting up a Dec. 2 runoff between Mark Dahlquist and Greg Cates. Blad's 16-year tenure as mayor — after defeating Roger Chase in the 2009 election — is set to end, with Dahlquist and Cates both earning more votes than him, triggering a runoff election on Dec. 2. Dahlquist earned 5,135 votes, or 40.21 percent; Cates earned 3,938 votes, or 30.83 percent; and Blad earned 1,830 votes, or 14.33 percent. According to his campaign website, Dahlquist, the executive director of NeighborWorks Pocatello for 18 years, has built his campaign around housing affordability, economic development and fiscal transparency. His website states that during his tenure at NeighborWorks, he led neighborhood revitalization projects that have added $42 million to the Bannock County tax base, including developments like the Bonneville Commons and Park Meadows Senior Apartments. An Idaho State University graduate with a background in private-sector management at Farmers Insurance, Dahlquist's website says he has promised to modernize zoning, streamline permits and launch a "Clean & Green" corridor
