It's unknown if the victim was followed to the industrial park or if the suspect was lying in wait, but police say this does not appear to be a robbery and the UPS driver was targeted. Investigators are trying to determine what kind of relationship the victim may have had with his attacker.

Video from AIR7 HD showed a police canopy set up next to a UPS truck as officers canvassed the area for evidence. The immediate area was roped off by yellow crime scene tape.

A UPS driver was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in Irvine, police said. The suspect remains on the loose.

Police say that area was a place where the UPS driver would normally take his breaks after making deliveries. His family told Eyewitness News that he was a father of two and previously served in the military.

According to police, they put out a red channel alert for the suspect's vehicle.

Authorities located the suspect vehicle parked some 20 minutes away on Santiago Canyon Road, between Jamboree and Irvine Lake and a standoff with the suspect ensued. He was eventually taken into custody after being flushed out of the truck with a K9.

Police say that was the same pickup truck seen on surveillance video pulling up beside the UPS truck, shooting inside, then driving away.

Authorities urge anyone who may have information regarding this homicide investigation to call IPD at (949) 724-7200.

Police will remain on scene for several hours due to the investigation.

    Standoff at Santiago Canyon Road

Authorities converged on a silver-colored pickup truck Thursday afternoon on Santiago Canyon Road in Orange, which they confirmed was related to the homicide of a UPS driver.

A SWAT team surrounded the pickup truck as police snipers and a K9 unit were seen atop a hillside.

It's unknown how the truck ended up on that stretch of Santiago Canyon Road.

Shortly after 6 p.m., police were seen shooting into the pickup truck after attempting to gas out the suspect. It was not immediately clear if they were less lethal rounds. A K9 was unleashed to apprehend the suspect who was holed up inside the back of the truck.

Police were able to extract a bloody suspect from the truck and was immediately taken into custody. He was seen being bandaged and loaded into an ambulance.

No further details were immediately known.
