When Lisa DeShano of Iowa City was growing up in a Detroit suburb in the late 1980s, her elementary school playground was a bare, flat section of asphalt and nothing else – no swings or slides and not even a merry-go-round. Frustrated, she went to her school principal and asked for a real...
The Completely Free Garden Hiding In A Iowa City Center Is A Must-Visit
During the summer, there’s nothing I love more than getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and exploring some peaceful gardens. Of course, Iowa has some amazing ones – including those in cities like Des Moines and Ames. But did you know there’s one hidden garden in Des Moines that is open to the public for only a few hours each week – and it’s tied to one of the most iconic brands in American magazines? The Better Homes and Gardens Test Garden is located in the heart of Iowa’s biggest city, and it’s only open to the public on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. Tours are self-guided, and they provide a fascinating look into a collection of ecosystems that the magazine uses when developing recommendations for how to transform your own garden. Who knows – you just might be inspired!

Depending on if you're sharing the meal or not...it's extremely filling so you may need to loosen the belt buckle afterwards or make sure you grab a box for leftovers.

Garden Walks with Judy: My small garden oasis
