A famous author called '(Back Home Again in) Indiana' a 'direct steal'

The author was Theodore Dreiser of "Sister Carrie" and "American Tragedy" fame, and in 1897 his brother wrote "On the Banks of the Wabash," which became wildly popular. So popular, in fact, that many think "(Back Home Again in) Indiana" was written as an homage to it. But over the course of 1940 — just six years before an iconic "Indiana" performance at the Indy 500 — Dreiser tried to have famous parts of its chorus removed .
