Monday, May 13: Storms at times this week keep the area soggy

Mom’s couldn’t have asked for a nicer weekend! Beautiful conditions carried us through Mother’s Day, but the new week comes with unsettled weather.
An upper-level storm system is currently spinning away over Northern Missouri. This system produced waves of scattered showers and thunderstorms. In the afternoon heat, there was even a tornado touchdown southeast of Hollister. The tornado appears to have been brief and didn’t cause much damage, but it did give golfers a scare.
The risk for severe weather remains limited this evening, mainly east of Hwy. 65 and south of I-44. Strong winds and hail and a brief tornado will remain possible this evening with the stronger storms.
After the storms fade this evening, clouds will thin and areas of fog will likely develop. There’s a possibility for dense fog by morning.
The storm near Kansas City will drift east into Illinois Tuesday afternoon with widespread clouds Tuesday morning. A few peaks of afternoon sunshine will send temperatures to near 70° with another batch of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms breaking out. Severe weather isn’t expected, but rain could be locally heavy along with some lightning.
We should be dry on Wednesday with sunnier skies as well. Temperatures will warm into the upper 70s.
More rain is expected to arrive Thursday into Friday as a mid-level disturbance passes overhead. Once again the severe weather risk is low with this next system, thunderstorms are likely to develop. Heavy rain and lightning will be the main concerns.
Rain chances dwindle by Friday afternoon and this weekend should be mostly dry and mostly sunny. The mornings look comfortably cool with afternoon highs in the low to mid-80s.
Storms will try to work back into the forecast early next week. Severe weather chances may return as well as stronger wind energy and higher levels of instability come into play.
