BGSU announces new dean for College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering
BOWLING GREEN — Following a national search, Bowling Green State University has selected Wael Mokhtar as dean for the College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering. Mr. Mokhtar is director of the School of Engineering at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich. As director, he has led student recruitment and retention initiatives, developed new engineering degree programs, and led two successful accreditations through the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. He holds a doctorate in aerospace engineering from Old Dominion University and is a professor of mechanical engineering at GVSU. His research interests include computational fluid dynamics, wind tunnel testing, vehicle aerodynamics, and teaching methods. He will join BGSU in July and will succeed Kendall Harris, who has served as interim dean since August.

Inmate dies after being found unconscious at Lucas County jail
An inmate died after being found unconscious in the medical housing unit at the Lucas County jail, the county sheriff’s office said in a statement. Ralph A. Vidak, 39, was found at 2:13 p.m. Sunday by jail staff, who rendered assistance before he was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, where he died at 2:50 a.m. Monday. Mr. Vidak had been booked into the jail Tuesday night on felony drug trafficking, drug abuse, and theft charges. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was investigating his death Monday.

Toledo police fentanyl seizures greatly rise this year
Toledo police seizures of fentanyl sharply increased in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2023. . Police seized 317.71 grams of fentanyl in January, February, and March last year. In the first quarter this year, the amount climbed to 2,806 grams of fentanyl. The seizures are from vehicles, investigations, and search warrants in houses. “Unfortunately, there’s a lot of fentanyl in the community,” Police Chief Mike Troendle said. “It’s being cut, for some reason now, and used in every other drug, like marijuana, cocaine, heroin — we’re finding a component of fentanyl in almost every other type of drug out there — even Ecstasy. It’s in easy supply right now, so it’s a good filler, it makes the drug stronger,” he said. Making matters worse, many users want drugs mixed with fentanyl even after hearing about overdoses.
Friends of the Library book sale to start May 17
The Friends of the Library book sale is opens to the public Friday in the organizations space at 1310 N. Reynolds Rd. The sale will feature more than 30,000 books, both hardcovers and paperbacks, sorted and categorized. All gently used books will be sold for $1 each, or less. There will also be CDs, DVDs, audiobooks on CD or cassette, records, board games, and 8-track tapes for sale. Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization that encourages, promotes, and supports the ongoing development and use of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library. The organization supports the Summer Concert Series, Authors! events, Summer Read, branch activities, and levy campaigns. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Crash into power pole on Mother’s Day shuts down Alexis Rd. in Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A crash into a pole knocked out power and shut down Alexis Rd. during the evening of Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024. Toledo Police say the woman behind the wheel was taken to the hospital and is expected to be all right. Neighbors tell 13 Action News they had to help the driver get out of the vehicle, adding that she was coherent following the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
Wayward tractor-trailer fells cables along Northwood street
A tractor-trailer pulled down telecommunications cables Monday when it ventured onto a residential street in Northwood, police said. Multiple cable spans were torn down in the incident reported at 6:03 p.m. near Harding Avenue and Oram Road. Among the Buckeye Broadband customers affected by the resulting outage was the Northwood police station itself, although a spokesman said the department switched to a backup system and its emergency response capability was not impaired. Geoff Shook, president and general manager of Buckeye Broadband, said service to about a dozen other customers was interrupted.
Road Warrior: Final reconstruction touch-ups close southbound I-75 lanes
Touch-up work associated with the recent I-75 reconstruction near downtown Toledo will close a southbound lane near the South Avenue interchange for about six weeks. “Corrective work” on a parapet wall in that area is why the right lane will close sometime this week, the Ohio Department of Transportation said. Repair of the barrier wall near the bridge over railroad tracks north of Glenwood Road began a few weeks ago and is expected to take at least a couple more weeks to finish. ODOT also said it expects to begin final paving on I-75’s southbound lanes between South Avenue and Glenwood Road by “mid-May,” which potentially means sometime this week.
