Getting back to Food Lion in 2026
Howdy folks, and welcome back to Houston Historic Retail. Today we’re taking a look at a grocer who tried and failed in the Houston market nearly 20 years ago: Food Lion. Today’s store is located in Abingdon, VA, just a stone’s throw from regional grocer Food City’s HQ and Distribution Center. If Food Lion had stuck it out in Houston, it’s not impossible we’d have small store/shopping-center combos like this. However, they didn’t, so we don’t. While I won’t go into detail about Food Lion’s rough go in Texas, the easiest way to sum it up is that bad timing and intense competition pushed the American-born but European-owned chain back East.
