KINGSPORT — The following public statement was issued by Ballad Health on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and released to the media: Ballad Health has been, and remains, committed to negotiating in good faith with our long-term partner, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, to reach an updated provider agreement for its commercial, Exchange, TennCare and Medicare Advantage products while protecting access to care for the people, employers and communities we serve. Currently, Ballad Health also uses BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to provide administrative services for its own employees, who are self-insured by Ballad Health. Health systems across the country, including Ballad Health, are facing several imminent challenges, including: an increasing number of individuals leaving the insurance exchanges and becoming uninsured due to the elimination of enhanced premium subsidies by the federal government; major cuts to the Medicaid directed payment program for hospitals, which disproportionately impact rural regions, set to begin in January 2028 under the provisions of HR 1, otherwise referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill”; rising inflationary costs of supplies and medications; and increased subsidies for physician services due to low reimbursement by insurers, Medicare and Medicaid, driven in large part by the low Medicare area wage index in our

Covenant Health has debuted two aircraft for the Covenant Health Air fleet, marking an important milestone for the health system’s air medical transport program. “At Covenant Health Air, our goal is simple: provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place for the patients we serve across East Tennessee,” said Danny McCreary, operations and management director for Emergency Medical Services at Covenant Health. “Whether we’re responding to an accident scene or transporting a patient between hospitals, our team is focused on providing safe, high-quality care while helping patients reach the resources they need as quickly as possible.” Operated through a partnership with Air Methods, Covenant Health Air provides rapid air medical transport and advanced critical care services for patients experiencing serious illness or injury. The program supports both on-scene responses and interfacility transports, helping ensure patients receive timely access to the appropriate level of care. Since launching in May, Covenant Health Air has been requested more than 800 times, serving communities across East Tennessee and helping bridge gaps in access to specialized medical services. Local HIV Center Sues Department of Health for Limiting Some HIV/AIDS Services to Noncitizens

A Middle Tennessee HIV care center is suing the Tennessee Department of Health over a new rule restricting some access to certain federally funded services to U.S. citizens. According to the complaint, on Aug. 18, local case managers received an email from Robertson Nash, TDH’s Director of HIV Programs. Effective immediately, he wrote, patients who could not prove citizenship or legal residency would not be eligible for federally funded Ryan White and Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS services or benefits “other than HIV testing, treatment and associated core medical services via [the HIV Drug Assistance Program].”
