Storied band director hangs up marching shoes
LINCOLNTON – For the first time in multiple decades, Neil Underwood is no longer slipping on his marching shoes and teaching young people to drill. This isn’t the first time Underwood has retired. The first time was in 2015 as the band director at North Lincoln High School, but he was enticed out of retirement a year later to accept a position as instructor of music and associate director of university bands at Lenoir-Rhyne University (LR). There was no marching band program at LR when Underwood was hired – he built that from the ground up.
