Pittsburgh Pirates' team dog has a new name
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates have a new team dog and now we know its name will be Slugger! The votes have been counted in the contest to pick the team dog's new name and with 31% of the vote, the people have spoken and chosen Slugger over Bandit, Rookie, and Homer. The Pirates have again teamed up with Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, which is building a training facility in Western Pennsylvania, will train the pup to pair with a military veteran in need. "Fans can expect to see the furry future service dog at Pirates games and community events, including the Mental Health Action Game May 3," the team. "The engagement with fans will expose the pup to the socialization needed to become a service dog."Last year's team dog, Bucco, was paired with a local veteran in September 2023. He was the team's first Pirate Pup. Bucco was selected by the fans over Homer, Rookie and Jolly.

Trib HSSN softball team of the week – Hempfield Spartans. Coach: Tina Madison (3rd season) #Earned: Hempfield began a busy week with an eight-game winning streak and ended a stretch of four games in five days with 12 consecutive victories. Following a Monday whitewash of Baldwin, 10-0, the Spartans geared up for the rematch with section championship ramifications against front running Seneca Valley. With Clemson recruit Lexie Hames unable to start due to injury, Hempfield went to town with an incredible offensive performance, pounding out 15 hits to forge a tie for first place and likely the section crown, 15-2. There was no immediate letdown the next day as Hempfield blanked Pine-Richland, 10-0; however, on Friday, the Spartans dug themselves a hole and trailed 8-2 before rallying to edge the Rams, 10-9.
WPIAL reveals brackets for 2024 softball playoffs
Four defending champions are favored to repeat in the upcoming WPIAL softball playoffs. Reigning champions Hempfield in Class 6A, Avonworth in 3A, Neshannock in 2A and Union in A were among the six teams that received No. 1 seeds when the WPIAL revealed playoff brackets Thursday. The two other top seeds went to Armstrong in Class 5A and Elizabeth Forward in 4A.
