Pittsburgh-area elementary students release trout they raised from eggs
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Kids got a lesson in fish and clean water in Washington County on Thursday. After months of raising trout, students from Trinity Elementary Schools saw their projects come to an end at Mingo Creek Park in Nottingham Township. School buses pulled up to the park filled with fifth graders from Trinity East. The students got off and gathered around three buckets of trout. PITTSBURGH — Nominations are out for this year's Gene Kelly Awards, a celebration of high school musicals and their incredible student performers. Among the shows being recognized is the Woodland Hills pilot production of "Wonderland," a grown-up version of "Alice in Wonderland." It scored multiple nominations, including Best Musical, Best Vocal Ensemble and Best Dance Ensemble.

Pittsburgh firefighters union gets service dog
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Firefighters in Pittsburgh now have a new furry friend they can go to when they're hurt. On Monday, Gunny's Ridge K9 dog service presented the Pittsburgh firefighters union with a new service dog. Maverick, a 9-month-old golden retriever, will be utilized by the union's peer support group, which helps firefighters through recovery."We'll be doing station visits after stressful critical events. We also have plans in the works now to do fire prevention with schools -- do stuff in the community, nursing homes, stuff like that. Get him out and about," said Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire peer support group member Josh Hallmark. Since he's so young, Maverick is still going through training along with Josh, his new owner. Maverick is the first service dog of his kind for firefighters in the city of Pittsburgh.Gunny's Ridge's K9 Service Dog program currently provides service dogs to veterans and first responders. "Whether it's through physical limitations that they have or, you know, emotional support, PTSD, things like that -- our dogs can train across a variety of areas," said Michael Snider, the president of Gunny's Ridge.

Hundreds of items from former Greensburg state prison up for online auction
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- From tools to steel bars, there's an online auction going on right now featuring items from the former state prison in Greensburg.There are more than 600 items available in the auction and some of the items with the most bids so far include a vinyl shed, a machinery sign.The highest bids for those items are currently less than $20.Perhaps you're doing a bathroom renovation and you're tight on space. If that's the case and you're interested, stainless steel sink/toilet combinations are an option.Right now they're cheap, with the starting bid at just $5. The online auction will run through May 21 and if you do purchase any items, they must be picked up in person.
