Dawn Tevis Japanese Water Marbling Class
Discover the meditative art of Suminagashi—Japanese water marbling—in an immersive, three-hour workshop guided by local artist Dawn Tevis at the Winona Arts Center Saturday November 14, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Known for her calming, contemplative approach to “floating ink,” Dawn will guide you through the ancient 12th-century process of floating pigments on water to capture one-of-a-kind fluid designs. In this specialized class, you will transition traditional marbling techniques onto a prepped silk scarf (approximately 14” x 72”). You’ll start by experimenting with sample papers to find your creative flow and preferred colors before dipping your main piece. Watch your hand-manipulated patterns come to life as the silk absorbs the ink directly from the water’s surface. Beginners and experienced creators alike will leave with a wearable masterpiece. Cost: $65 includes all materials as well as prep of silk scarf . Optional Add-on: Add a silk handkerchief (approximately 11” x 11”). for an additional $15—perfect for creating a custom, matching set. Deer hunting safety at Mineral Springs debate continues
At the 70th meeting he has attended, resident Gary Jones said there is still “a big element of danger” with archery hunting in Mineral Springs Park. “I’m confident that Capt. DuChene is right on target with vetting the different people. But my issue is more to the fact of in Mineral Springs, the 150-foot setback from a property line; when an arrow can go 900 feet, it still leaves a big element of danger in there,” he said after Tuesday’s council meeting. “I think that not every park is the same. There are some that are far more remote, with little or no foot traffic … Mineral Springs is just, I think, too small.” Jones was referring to the review of Owatonna’s deer management program seasons and locations at the Tuesday council study session. Police Capt. Tracy DuChene, Public Works Director Sean Murphy and Park Maintenance Manager Jesse Wilker updated the council on the management program’s history and what has happened since the season started Sunday. In 2014, the council asked Parks and Recreation to develop a program to cull the deer herd within the city. According to the April 7 study session packet, 217 deer have been taken since

Students and staff report they’re loving Faribault’s new school lunches, administrators say. “There’s a lot of happy faces, a lot of happy kids. They’re actually finishing their meals,” Cathy Hammerschmidt, food service coordinator, said. “Taher done a great job showcasing the foods and the recipes and everybody’s really excited to try the food. Teachers have been eating it. It’s been well received.” This is the first year of Faribault Public Schools’ new partnership with Taher, a food service management company based out of Minnetonka. Monday morning, kindergarteners had their chicken spaghetti scooped up by Bente, who will be visiting every school to serve lunch. Superintendent Jamie Bente visited Roosevelt Early Learning Center to serve Faribault’s new food to kindergartners. Barbie Roessler, director of finance and operations for Faribault Public Schools, said the district picked Taher from four other qualified vendors who sent proposals to the school. “We had been in a long-standing relationship with our previous food vendor and knew that a change was needed for our students, families, and staff,” she
