Texas removes parts of damaged batter's eye at UFCU Disch-Falk Field ahead of Kansas game
Hitting a home run over the wall in centerfield at UFCU Disch-Falk Field has become less of a tall task. Inclement weather and wind at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Thursday afternoon caused the top of the batter's eye in centerfield to collapse. After Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte tweeted that an impromptu construction project might cause a slight delay to the start of UT's home game against Kansas, workers removed the last of the damaged panels around 6 p.m.
No. 1 Texas softball set to start NCAA Tournament Friday
The No. 1 overall seed Texas Longhorns softball team opens up NCAA Tournament play in the Austin regional against Siena Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT at Red & Charline McCombs Field. The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network. The Longhorns highest seed before earning the No. 1 national seed was No. 3 in 2011. One of the leaders for Texas is Reese Atwood, who was named one of 10 finalists for the 2024 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Wednesday. She boasts a .909 slugging percentage and has 86 RBI on the season. Atwood was named Big 12 player of the year May 8. The winner of the Texas-Siena contest will play the winner of the matchup between St. Francis (Pa.) and Northwestern in game three of the regional bracket Saturday at noon CT. The losers of each contest will play in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
Dripping Springs Tigers fall short to New Braunfels Unicorns in Game 3 of Area playoffs
DRIPPING SPRINGS — On Saturday, May 11, the Dripping Springs Tigers Varsity Baseball team traveled to Johnson High School in Buda as a neutral site for the third game in the UIL 6A playoffs against the New Braunfels High School Unicorns. The final score was Unicorns 7, Tigers 6. The Tigers scored four runs in the first inning and the Unicorns chipped away on the Tigers' lead. The Unicorns took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and after seven regular innings of play, the score was tied at 6. The Tigers were unable to score in the top of the eighth inning and in the bottom of that inning, the Unicorns rallied to have a runner on third. The referee called a balk on the Tiger's pitcher and the Unicorns runner on third scored, leaving the Unicorns to win 7-6. The fans were stunned by the call and Unicorns celebrated their victory. For the first game of the playoffs, the Tigers traveled to New Braunfels High School on Thursday, May 9. The Tigers dropped game one after a lengthy lightning delay; the final score was Unicorns 1, Tigers 0. Game two was played at Tiger Stadium with a large home crowd cheering the team on. Tiger pitcher Cooper Rummel threw a complete game, gave up one hit and had eight strikeouts. The final score was Tigers 4, Unicorns 0. The Tigers finished the season with a record of 25-11. The Tigers have seven seniors and will return a large group of underclassmen.
