Texas, Idaho abortion bans test against federal emergency medicine rule
THE TEXAS TRIBUNE For almost 40 years, American hospitals have operated under a federal law that says they must treat and stabilize any patient experiencing a medical emergency. But now, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act finds itself on a collision course with conservative states that want to ban abortion in nearly all cases. The Biden administration has sued Idaho, saying that state’s abortion ban violates EMTALA because its exceptions are too narrow to allow doctors to perform abortions if needed to stabilize a patient. Texas, meanwhile, has sued the Biden administration, saying it's using EMTALA as an end-run around state abortion...

Defense impresses at Maroon & Gold Spring Game
Texas State wrapped up the spring practice with the Maroon and Gold Spring Game. Head G.J. Kinne was happy to see both the offense and the defense complete but thrilled that both sides came out injury free. “We got out healthy which is the most important aspect of this entire ordeal,” Kinne said. “I thought the defense came out and played well early. That is a good sign. The offense bounced back and ended up with a good day. We saw flashes of what we can be offensively and defensively.” Though the spring game didn’t see many starters from last year play from...

The Rattlers found their groove at the plate Friday night. San Marcos bested New Braunfels 7-6 after jumping out to a fiverun lead by way of a six-run second inning. The Unicorns were able to chip away at the lead throughout the game, but the San Marcos’ early offensive explosion sealed the win for the Rattlers in the end. “I thought [the way we started offensively] was amazing. Usually for us, we have a hard time playing from behind. So when Cruz came up and hit that shot in the first inning — it was a monster. She is a heck of...

Exploring Nature: Carolina Chickadee
, Let us pay homage to the chickadee, a small bird with a big personality and one of the regulars, along with titmice and cardinals, at my backyard bird feeder. I’m told the Carolina chickadee has a call that goes “chick-a-dee-deedee- dee.” I don’t think I have ever heard one call. This is an acrobatic bird that can feed upside down a well as right side up. Of all birds, it is the one most likely to eat seeds from your hand. It weighs about a half ounce. Harold Osborne wrote a poem about this bird: I think that I shall never see/A bird...
Call Her Wonder Woman
, Percussionist Bella Sera When Bella Sera was growing up in Houston, Texas, she was tired of other kids calling her derogatory names due to her Marfan-syndrome-related tall stature, so she told them to call her “an Amazon” instead. “If you’re going to call me something related to my height, call me an Amazon. I took it as a big compliment to be called something that related to Wonder Woman,” Sera said. That kind of bold spunk and positive outlook has taken Sera on a journey to become a rock drummer, and a bit of a Wonder Woman in her own right. Not cleared...

Ozona Bank donates to Greenbelt Alliance to help wildflowers
At its core, the reason Ozona Bank in San Marcos donated to the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance is simple. “We’ve got to keep those flowers growing,” Jenifer Reed, Ozona Bank Branch Manager at the San Marcos, said. “It is what Lady Bird wants.” The bank donated $1,000 to the Greenbelt Alliance to help seed wildflowers in the alliance’s 6 natural areas covering more than 1,200 acres with 22 miles of trails. “This will help, because we have to buy seeds,” John Cradit, president of the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance, said. “We will buy them, go out in the meadows and find places where we...
