HASLETT, Mich. (WLNS) — Dozens of senior citizens living at Grange Acres in Haslett are calling on the owners of the complex to let them keep their personal gardens.
The group made their voices heard while carrying signs during a protest on Saturday from about 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
6 News reported the community’s concerns after they had first received notice from First Housing Corporation that they would have to remove their personal gardens from in front of their units by May 31.
At Saturday’s rally, the residents continued with their push to keep the gardens.
One of the organizers said the community had already sent two letters to the management company. Now, the rally is just one more way they’re looking to continue the fight.
“It’s their way to get involved in what we’re doing,” said Robert Flanders, who lives at Grange Acres.
“It’s just not a small group of people; we had over 130 sign the second letter, there were 30 people that signed the first one, and we’ve had people say, ‘I want to sign that; where can I do that?’ so it’s broad.”
6 News reached out to the management company for comment, but they are closed on the weekends. First Housing Corporation previously told 6 News that they have been trying to work with residents on the issue, but that people’s areas have become an “eyesore.”
